Worry Doll

Worry dolls come from an old Guatemalan and Mexican tradition: tiny handmade figures that children whisper their worries to before placing them under their pillow at night, so by morning, the doll has taken the worry away.
When I was 9, my mom came on a field trip with my class to Mexicantown in Detroit. I was so proud, watching her, born and raised in Mexico City, share her culture with all of us. In a little gift shop, she bought me a drawstring bag filled with the tiniest, sweetest dolls I had ever seen: worry dolls. As a kid who was always worried, they felt like magic.
This charm is a relic of that moment. A symbol of her motherhood, of my childhood, of something sacred and soft and small.
